About Us

Women Maker Program

This website is designed by students in the Women's Maker Program in the University of Virginia. The program is funded by the Thomas Jefferson Trust and run by UVA librarians at the Robertson Media Centre. The goal of the program is to promote greater confidence in female undergraduate students, improve their sense of belonging in STEM fields, and better prepare them for careers in the STEM workforce.

Why this Website?

Every UVA student has to go through the process of transferring from a first year to a second year. Many students start their second year unaware of just how different first year and second year are. We wish to make the adjustment period for incoming second year students less stressful. One of the challenges our team encountered as we started our second year of college was the decreased accessibility we had to food on Grounds. Many second years choose to get limited meal plans, making them more likely to have to buy groceries and eat food from restaurants. Most UVA students are not from Charlottesville, which might make it more difficult for them to know which restaurants have the most affordable food, or what grocery stores are closest to them. They might even be unaware of what food resources are available to them On-Grounds. We want to ensure that upperclassmen at UVA know all the resources that are available to them to make the transition from first year to second year smoother.
